December 5th: Jesus is the Shepherd King

Ezekiel 37:22-24

I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel, and one king will rule over all of them. They will no longer be two nations and will no longer be divided into two kingdoms. They will not defile themselves anymore with their idols, their abhorrent things, and all their transgressions. I will save them from all their apostasies by which they sinned, and I will cleanse them. Then they will be my people, and I will be their God. My servant David will be king over them, and there will be one shepherd for all of them. They will follow my ordinances, and keep my statutes and obey them.

Roughly five-hundred years after King David died, the prophet Ezekiel prophesied of a future “David” who would be a Shepherd-King over the people of God. He would rule over them, gently as a Shepherd. Under His rule, the prophet testified that the people would be obedient and submissive people.

This future King and Shepherd is proven by the Apostles to be Jesus. He is the descendant of David that Ezekiel promised. The foundation of his throne is righteousness and justice, and his people love Him and obey His commandments.

As the subjects to King Jesus, someday we will see Jesus lifted up and reigning from His throne. Our hearts will be fully glorified and sanctified. Our pleasure will be to glorify Him as He shepherds us for eternity.
