Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!
Shout in triumph, Daughter Jerusalem!
Look, your King is coming to you;
he is righteous and victorious,
humble and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
In a prophetic voice, Zechariah encourages the people of God to lift up their voice in praise for their King. It is very easy for us to imagine a great crowd gathered along the side of the road as a king, or president, or other dignitary passes by; we see this constantly. Try and amplify that scene to the one that Zechariah describes. The people are not celebrating out of joy for celebrity, but rather for what is coming with Him, salvation. This leader is said to be bringing salvation and righteousness to the people.
This is the scene that gets lived out in reality as Jesus enters Jerusalem at the beginning of His Passion Week. He came to bring salvation to His people through righteousness. His entry into the city on the back of a donkey was just one of those acts of humble righteousness that needed to be perfected in Him. That act of humility would eventually lead to His sacrificial death, the victorious act that brings the salvation His people need.
So “rejoice greatly” and “shout aloud” today. Your King has come in splendid humility and righteousness. and along with Him, he has brought salvation to you.
