On this mountain
he will destroy the burial shroud,
the shroud over all the peoples,
the sheet covering all the nations;
he will destroy death forever.
The Lord God will wipe away the tears
from every face
and remove his people’s disgrace
from the whole earth,
for the Lord has spoken.
Working at a funeral home means I probably think about death more than most. And sometimes, my thoughts about death go to these very verses. There is going to be a day when the Messiah puts me out of business, and Death will die forever. Ponder those words, someday, death will not happen. In order for this to be the case, the opposite must be true. Meaning life must always happens. In order for death to never happen again life will never end again!
As great as the end of physical death will be, we have a taste of a greater life now. Jesus’ resurrection from the dead is our surety that we can have that eternal spiritual life now. We have an unending life through him in this world in this age. He has given us eternal life now; we have been resurrected from our spiritual death and we have a new spiritual life.
So as we prepare our hearts for Advent, rejoice knowing that your eternal life cannot end. Though we wait for Jesus to swallow up physical death, we have confidence that the spiritual life we have now can and will transcend that death throughout eternity.
