Book Review: CSB Disciple’s Study Bible

Holman continues to crank out new Bibles with the new CSB translation. One of the newest study Bibles to come out is the CSB Disciple’s Study Bible.

This publication seeks to marry the study notes of the typical study Bible with the “how-to” publications discussing. This Bible is centered around a 260-day reading schedule called F-260, it has 52 weeks of 5 daily readings. Then interspersed throughout the Bible are H.E.A.R. Journaling (Highlight, Explain, Apply, Respond) pages that are meant to be used as a way to review that day’s readings. The intended effect is that the reading will be introduced to the whole of Scripture, its main themes, and have mastered the skill of studying the Bible. At the end of the Bible are numerous articles about discipleship; everything from how to start a “D-group” to how to disciple women, children, and how to pray for others.

So what do I think? My favorite Bible is the Holman Christian Standard Pastor’s Bible. I have been using it for over 10 years and absolutely love it, but Holman is letting me down on these most recent Bibles. Don’t get me wrong, I am sure that a lot of work and thought goes into these study Bibles, but except for the “She Reads Truth Study Bible,” I have yet to see a worthwhile publication that merits investment for disciples of Jesus.

It would be nearly impossible to use this Bible in any other setting than sitting in a quiet room by yourself…which is the antithesis of what it is “teaching” you to do. But with all the pages dedicated to notes, journals, and the reading schedule, it is too difficult to navigate. The pages of these new Bibles are overly cluttered, they area poorly setup, and I think they actually discourage the use and reading of Scripture. With so many other materials, “helps”, notes and inserted structures, the Bible changes. It becomes some kind of strange tool meant to do one job. They become niche books rather than being sufficient Scripture.

Disclaimers: This Bible was provided to me by the publisher in exchange for my honest review. Amazon links are affiliate links.
